The initial sparks of inspiration for Valthea—I Read People came from two of author, C.K. Mallick’s childhood memories. She grew up near Venice, Florida, the former winter home of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and she loved listening to stories of the “intuitive” great-grandmother she never met.
Thirty years later, C.K.’s story ideas rekindled after watching a performance of Circus Sarasota featuring aerialist, Dolly Jacobs.
Mallick wrote Valthea’s story while interviewing performers, tent masters, and coaches. She also referenced her seventeen-year background in the entertainment industry, including dancing for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and teaching dance to children and teens.
Mallick signed with Canterbury House Publishing in July 2015 after submitting her novel for the Royal Palm Literary Award. At the Florida Writers Association annual conference this past October, it was announced that Valthea placed in the top third of the young adult category. “We are very excited to have Ms. Mallick as an author in our house,” says publisher, Wendy Dingwall. “She brings an energetic and enthusiastic attitude, and a generous spirit that we appreciate. She has a gift for writing lively and vivid stories that we think will resonate with young adults.”
In her own words, Mallick says, “I wanted to write something intriguing and fresh for teens without darkness, and vampires, but that showed a hero who has the power of ambition and focus, as well as compassion for others. Valthea is a teen who believed in, and worked for, ‘it all.’ I wanted to write a story that ‘gives back,’ speaks to the spirit of the reader, and is timeless in its truthfulness.”
In the novel, young heroine, Valthea, reads people’s pasts. She is determined to find her birth parents, headline a circus, and experience true love. This journey leads her to perform at festivals throughout Romania with a Gypsy troupe and an Eastern Europe, Cirque du Soleil-style circus. In her rise to stardom, empathetic Valthea, falls in love with Sorin Dobra the Gypsy troupe’s fire juggler with med-school ambition. Along the way she encounters jealousy, obsession, and bullying. But when Valthea’s loved-ones are threatened, will she be able to access her paranormal prowess or be forced to rely solely on heart and wit?
Mallick creates a world bursting with romance, visions and violence. It is the story of a girl who becomes ringleader of her own destiny. Valthea: I Read People is the first in a four book series called The Daughters, each main daughter character will have a special gift affecting her relationships with the people she encounters.
